As the Great Salt Lake nears collapse, Utah leaders turn to laws and technology. Meanwhile, poet Nan Seymour holds vigil at its shore, inspiring a movement of artists, poets, and scientists to reimagine a relationship of love and reciprocity in a fight to save Great Salt Lake.
Synopsis:
The Great Salt Lake’s fragile ecosystem stands on the brink of collapse. The future of this vital bioregion now rests with advocates, researchers, and Indigenous leaders raising their voices to awaken Utah’s conscience.
In 2022, poet Nan Seymour answered the lake’s urgent call, becoming an unexpected yet powerful champion. Her journey sparked a growing movement of writers, artists, and citizens drawn to celebrate and protect the lake.
The film opens with biologist Bonnie Baxter, a steadfast guardian, revealing the dire consequences of overconsumption on a pivotal Radio West interview. Her words, paired with haunting drone footage of the shrinking lake, lay bare the ecological crisis.
The film follows Nan starting in 2022 though 2025. Nan camped for 45 nights in 2022 and 2023 at the lake’s edge on Antelope Island, holding vigil and symbolizing resilience. In 2024 she took the vigil to the capitol itself. Her dedication ignites artistic expression—poetry, dance, and ceremony—offering a collective response to Utah state government's lack of urgency for the lake’s suffering.
